Root Causes

I've had an interesting thought recently come to me from the oddest of places. A friend had recently created a webpage on a social networking site. The page's intention is to create traffic and promote their organization. Upon joining I began to notice that I was one of three people that joined this group. I invited friends and friends joined. 

An obvious thing occurred to me, it takes effort to get things done. Effort is required.

Do I believe that life is based on all of my efforts? No. I think their are things beyond us that participate in our lives, and that I have experienced what some refer to as coincidences that has helped me, however I think it takes our participation. A good example is one i thought about reflecting on my recent trip in Europe. 

As I was taking photographs and video, I realized I can't create these images, these moments that I am capturing, but I sure as hell better know how to use my camera.

So what does this have to with root causes? 

I think realizing what our part is in a process will help us identify what the actual problem is.

Knowing that when using web 2.0 and social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook require participation on your part may reveal where the real effectiveness gap is occurring, meaning that if you create a Facebook page and only post one item on it, then it's probably not social media that is 'failing you'. It may be a behavior or personality that is causing the outcome of the campaign. 

I also think that as an artist it is very important to know our selves and to be willing to look into ourselves and ask difficult questions. Try to identify what is really going on.
